In this series, I explore my journey through past, present, and imagined futures of negotiating my mixed identity, using personified animals to represent various identities within Indigenous discourse. Distorted figures highlight the dangers of ‘primitivism’, while the dingo represents a foreign entity accepted into country, and the black swan stands as a sovereign guardian of the land. Limewash, evoking the sandstone of Darug country, reflects my reconnection with ancestral roots. The evolving colour mirrors the protagonist’s growth from a transparent, uncertain figure to one of self-assurance. My work suggests that embracing contradictions can lead to authenticity and deeper understanding of place.
